Development and Filming

During the season preview, it was revealed that the race will visit the countries of Nigeria and Samoa for the first time, and that the race will also visit Angola. Other previously unvisited countries include Antigua & Barbuda and Andorra.

Leg 3 of this season introduced the Head-To-Head, a challenge where teams faced off against each other in a series of matches in order to progress to the next challenge. Leg 6 introduced the Voting U-Turn, where teams vote on who they want U-Turned, and the team or teams with the most votes have to do both sides of the Detour. Leg 9 introduced the Voting Yield, a similar twist where teams voted on who they want Yielded.

Cast

Casting commenced during April 2019. Similar to Season 1 and Season 3, the cast for this season consists of all-female teams.

Three teams (Ramona & Sonja, Christina & Terri, Jessika & Jenny B) were also penalized for improperly completing the Detour. The initial placements for all teams are as follows (the five boldfaced teams were not given any penalties):

1st: Emma & Kate, 2nd: Linda & Tina, 3rd: Monique & Shawne, 4th: Ramona & Sonja, 5th: Christina & Terri, 6th: Laurita & Carlotta, 7th: Jessika & Jenny B, 8th: Carly & Sam, 9th: Daenerys & Missandei, 10th: Sadie & Katie, 11th: Meredith & Cristina, 12th: Pencil & Match

Note 3: Meredith, Missandei, Jenny B, Ramona and Laurita decided to forfeit the Roadblock and were issued a penalty on the spot.
Note 4: Sadie & Katie arrived third, but they were penalized at the Pit Stop for improperly completing the Detour. As a result, they dropped to fourth place.
Note 5: Daenerys decided to forfeit the Roadblock; they were issued a penalty on the spot.
Note 6: Sadie & Katie were held up in Luanda after the Head-To-Head. After being able to leave, they were instructed to go directly to the Pit Stop for elimination.
Note 7: Leg 4 was turned into a non-elimination leg due to unexpected production difficulties. As a result, Leg 5 became a double-elimination leg, and the last two teams to check in at the Pit Stop were both eliminated.
Note 8: Terri decided to forfeit the Roadblock; they were issued a penalty on the spot.
Note 9: Daenerys & Missandei struggled at the boju-boju task and fell way behind until after all the other teams had checked in at the Pit Stop. Phil called them over to the mat to inform them of their elimination.
Note 10: Four teams (Emma & Kate, Carly & Sam, Jessika & Jenny B, Monique & Shawne) were penalized for taking a taxi to Labadi Beach, instead of a bus as the clue had specified. The initial placements for all teams are as follows (the four boldfaced teams were not given any penalties):

1st: Linda & Tina, 2nd: Emma & Kate, 3rd: Carly & Sam, 4th: Ramona & Sonja, 5th: Meredith & Cristina, 6th: Jessika & Jenny B, 7th: Monique & Shawne, 8th: Christina & Terri

Note 11: Emma, Cristina, Ramona and Terri decided to forfeit the Roadblock; they were issued a penalty on the spot.
Note 12: Carly & Sam decided to take a short rest stop in Andorra La Vella after the Detour. The best friends overslept, and when they woke up, they were instructed to go directly to the Pit Stop for elimination.
Note 13: Emma & Kate elected to use the Express Pass to bypass the Roadblock during Leg 8. Before using the Express Pass, Emma elected to perform the Roadblock, and this is reflected in the total Roadblock count.
Note 14: Cristina & Christina decided to forfeit the Roadblock; they were issued a penalty on the spot.

For the first Roadblock of the Race, one team member had to enter the grounds and participate in a game of cricket. After successfully hitting a ball bowled by a cricketeer past a boundary, that team member had to then hit another ball past their first successful hit to receive their next clue.

For the Detour, teams had a choice between Ships or Shops. In Ships, teams had to run to the dock and sorted out 100 wandering tourists into five groups based on their shirt colors. Once all tourists were sorted, teams had to escort each group into the correct ship to receive their next clue from the tour guides. This continued until there were only two teams left, and the team that lost the final Kiela match had to wait out a specified time period before they could move on.

In this Roadblock, one team member had to work as a bike messenger by taking one of eleven packages, each with an instruction written in a different language, navigating Luanda's streets, which followed a unique traffic scheme, and delivering the package to the correct passenger, who was waiting at the Terminal Marítimo De Passageiros. The Fast Forward for the leg was hidden inside the one green-and-white clue box (among twenty scattered around Zuma Rock) whose colors matched exactly those of the Nigerian flag.

For the Detour, teams had the choice to either head to Jabi Lake (a man-made lake in the middle of Abuja) and complete a rowing course to Jabi Lake Mall (Across The Waters) or head to the Wuse Market and negotiate for bargains on three items (a wood carving, a painting and a piece of leatherwork) with a provided budget (Through The Crowds).
